Steroid & Joint Injections:

Steroid injections & cortisone shots for arthritis :

At Union Quay Medical Centre, we administer steroid injections such as cortisone shots into joints when pain-relieving or anti-inflammatory injections are required.

Cortisone shots are injections that may help relieve pain and inflammation in a specific area of your body. Cortisone shots are most commonly given into joints — such as your ankle, elbow, hip, knee, shoulder, spine and wrist. Even the small joints in your hands and feet may benefit from cortisone shots.

Cortisone shots usually include a corticosteroid medication and a local anaesthetic. In many cases, cortisone shots can be administered at Union Quay Medical Centre by Dr Nick Flynn (IMC 21468). In certain situations, it is preferable for joint injections to be performed in hospital e.g. where x-ray assistance is needed to help the injection. In such cases, we will arrange for you to see a local specialist as soon as possible. The number of cortisone shots you can receive in one year is generally limited because of potential side effects from the medication.

Non-steroid joint injections for arthritis:

For patients who prefer non-steroidal remedies, hyaluronic joint injections are one treatment that may ease the pain and stiffness of osteoarthritis (wear and tear arthritis). Hyaluronic acid joint injections are quick and relatively painless and have been on the market for more than a decade.

However, studies on their effectiveness show mixed results. Hyaluronan occurs naturally in the fluid that surrounds your joints. Hyaluronan is a thick liquid that helps lubricate the joints, making them work more smoothly. In people with osteoarthritis, the consistency of hyaluronan becomes thinner.

The idea behind hyaluronic acid joint injections is to replace some of the natural supply that's been lost. The procedure is simple: hyaluronic acid is injected directly into the cavity around the knee joint. A typical course of treatment is one injection a week for 3-5 weeks. In studies that show effectiveness, pain relief lasts for up to six months or maybe even a year.

It works better in some people than in others. The injections may be less effective in people who are older or have advanced osteoarthritis. Our doctors will advise you if you are suitable for this treatment.
